How Parks Are Selected
SPARK helps public schools develop their playgrounds into community parks.

The first step to having your community school participate in the SPARK program is to have the principal send a letter of interest requesting a SPARK Park. Schools in areas most in need of park development are usually the first ones selected to participate. The neighborhood must demonstrate a willingness to help plan and fund the SPARK Park.

Site visits by the SPARK staff confirm existing partnerships between the school and community groups such as churches, businesses and civic clubs. Once a school is selected, the principal meets with the PTO/PTA, civic clubs, parents and neighbors to form a SPARK committee. The SPARK Committee will be responsible for determining what the park will include. Touring existing SPARK Parks shows what playground equipment is available, and how art and landscaping is integrated into the design.

As a result of these influences, talents and efforts, every SPARK Park emerges totally unique, reflecting the needs, interests and creative efforts of its particular neighborhood.
